Lava & Kryptonite
Exhibit statement
The exhibit, Lava & Kryptonite is about two materials.
Although lava is real and kryptonite is not, both materials have a powerful, uncompromising presence.
The lava installation by Pedro Camarena and the kryptonite sculptures/paintings by John R. Thompson have an initial impact which is visceral rather than intellectual. The character of both of these materials is both familiar and legendary with a stream of associations.
Because of this, viewing the exhibit should become an personal innate experience, rather than a calculated appraisal. Pedro Camarena is a landscape architect on the UNAM Faculty. He recently served as President of the Sociedad de Arquitectos Paisajistas de México (SAPM).
His work includes La Serpiente (median in CU) and restoration of la Ruta de la Amistad. He is deeply concerned with preserving and recovering the unique ecology of the pedregal.
This is his first installation project, John R. Thompson is an artist and curator from New York City, now living in México.
He is a former member of the Faculty of Parsons School of Design and has exhibited his work in New York City, Europe, the United States and México.
In his curated exhibits he is interested in art with a strong material content and with the combination of art, design and ordinary objects to produce unusual dialogues. We Are Todos, the exhibition’s host, is a professional group that seeks collaborative and innovative solutions in multiple areas.
